Origin for Mac: The Alpha Starts Today!

Mac gamers rejoice: Origin for Mac will be launching soon, and starting today we’re offering you the opportunity to take it for a spin before the official release (UK fans click here) .This open alpha will only be available to a few thousand users in North America and the United Kingdom, so don’t wait—download your copy of our new Mac client (alpha build) today.

With Origin for Mac we’ll be able to offer the same Origin experience and features that define our PC app — cloud storage, auto-patching, friends list, and more — to Mac users everywhere. We’re very excited about the upcoming launch of Origin for Mac and the opportunity to reach the millions of Mac-based gamers out there.  We’re continuing to build Origin into a gaming service that truly lets you purchase and play anywhere, anytime.

You may notice that the Origin Store tab is not yet live in this alpha trial; rest assured, the store will be live—with a great catalog of EA and partner titles—when we formally release the client. Additionally, we’re not yet able to provide the same one-click streaming live to Twitch in Origin for Mac (we’ll be adding this as soon as possible).

Otherwise, the Mac client feels and behaves exactly like the PC version. Just like PC gamers, you'll be able to add non-Origin games to your library, use the Origin In Game overlay, chat with friends across platforms and games, and can continue your saved progress from any Origin-enabled Mac.

In order to make sure you can get the most out of this alpha trial, we’ve added a free copy of PopCap’s smash hit puzzle game, Bookworm, to your My Games library. This game is yours to download and keep, on us. We hope you enjoy it.

Finally, you’ll notice a Feedback button in your My Games library; it’s only there temporarily, but we hope you will use it to share your thoughts with us – after all, that’s what alpha access is for! If you have any further questions, check the FAQ here or comment below.

Your participation in this alpha trial is greatly appreciated, and your feedback will help ensure the best possible experience for all Mac gamers when we officially launch. If you have a Mac running OS X 10.6.8 or newer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better, we hope you’ll download the alpha and start gaming today.

We always love to hear your feedback, so if you would like to have a conversation about our Mac client, or about additional features and functionality you would like to see come to Origin in the future, leave us a comment below and we’ll do our best to get back to you.

Wonderful news. Does this mean that more EA games will be available for the Mac in the future as well? Also, when will this alpha be available for The Netherlands?

January 24, 2013
Hey VorteXLP - Mac Clients for future EA titles are dependent on the individual game teams, but we're hopeful that with the Origin Mac Client, it'll be a good reason to have a Mac version for more titles.

With regard to other countries, we're starting with North America / UK as a limited test, and will eventually roll it out to more as we make modifications to the client. There is no ETA at the moment.

voltum - We do not yet have a full list, but all users that jump into the Alpha Client right now get Bookworm for free, as stated above. More details soon.

Hey all,

As I stated earlier, we're starting with just North America and UK, but we'll be expanding it to more countries in the future. Don't worry, all of you will have access to the Mac client in the near future.

Great news at last!!
I hope this means that we will be able to play the new SimCity not too long after it comes out for the PC ;)
Also, please, please don't take too long to let the rest of the world try the new client.
Thanks from a Mac user in Portugal!

I hate to be "that guy", but are you releasing SimCity 2013 on Steam as well? I don't mind the game being tightly integrated with Origin, but it's a lot easier from my point of view to be able to download all my games from one client. Hope you consider this, EA! Best regards.

Does this mean I can pre-order simcity now and, eventhough is says PC Download, I will be able to download a mac version when it comes out!? I actually already did, some I need someone to tell me that was a dumb thing to do so that I can "return" the order

Hi!
When I woke up this morning I thought it was the best day of my life because I received an email to tell me I had been chosen to beta test sim city… Unfortunately, I never saw anywhere in the process of applying for beta testing that it would only be for windows users.

Will there be mac Beta?
Thank you for your fast answer!

Same question as others -- received the email to beta test SimCity, downloaded the Mac Origin alpha, but can't download the SimCity beta -- is it just for PC? Will there be a Mac beta soon???

Hey all, if you had an issue downloading the Mac Alpha yesterday, please try again- there was an issue that we were able to swiftly resolve.

We haven't announced a timeframe yet, but we abolutely plan to expand the territories where the Mac client can be downloaded in the not too distant future.

Also, please note that the Sim City beta is an entirely separate test from the Mac alpha, and is strictly PC-only at this time.

Ah question regarding Origin and the forthcoming Mac release:
Will Mac and PC version be sold separately, or will all purchases made, be for both platforms (as long as there are versions for both platforms of course)?

E.g. The Sims and Dragon Age, will purchases made for PC be valid for the Mac versions?

FIFA 13 was initially announced for Mac. Earlier this year I was told it comes out with the Origin app. Is this still the case?

January 28, 2013
Our goal is to provide users with as many hybrid-platform games (also known as dual-entitlement, where a gamer who buys a game on PC will also receive a Mac version, and vice versa) as possible. Current Origin gamers who sign in to the Mac client will see all their hybrid-platform titles in their My Games library. PC gamers can check to see if any of their titles are hybrid-platform by selecting Mac from the Platform pull-down in the My Games library.

@Ahiru - We'll have a Mac-specific store coming in the future.

I'm curious as to why you would limit your beta to two territories? Wouldn't it be better to spread your beta licenses to select users in all territories in order to get a broader and more diverse test result?

kiwikrieg, there is no separate newsletter, but make sure to keep an eye on ths blog, as well as our Twitter and Facebook channels for the latest news on the Mac client.

Yes, the Alpha was not available in Mexico, sorry.

And sorry, we cannot comment on release dates for the client at this time, but please note that we recently announced that Sim City for Mac will ship sometime in Spring 2013, after the PC version.

I downloaded Origin Alpha on release date about 3 or 4 times.. each time I wasn't able to get past the "Thank you for trying Origin for Mac" window. Kept crashing. Over and over and over again. Uninstalled, as there was no point in having it on my computer. Hope to see that crashes are fixed when Origin for Mac goes live for all users.

There are several expansions to the Sims 3 that I would like to purchase now. However, I won't spend money on these until I know that if i purchase a PC digital download now that I will be able to use it in the Mac version of Origin once it's released without having to re-purchase anything.

I would think this would be a common question for people and something that should easily be answered by EA at this point.
mayoliz11
February 3, 2013
I'm sure there are many people now that bought the key and free download for The Sims 3. I got mine for 20.45 but no free download. I was told a key and a free download, but no download and I wasn't also told about the origin for mac is not longer available. Although this was a test that I wasn't aware about I appreciate for the limited time, but this is not what I paid for. Is there anyway where I can get my money back please?
EA_ComRaven
February 4, 2013
Racing_Girl14: Yes, you will be able to download and play for free any games that show up in your library under the "Mac" platform filter.

Frouti: Thanks for the enthusiasm, you should keep an eye on this blog for future news.

BALLMEGAZER: Sorry, the Alpha trial has been clsoed to new testers for now.
EA_ComRaven
February 4, 2013
Auska7000: Thanks for your feedback, letting us know about issues you run into will definitely help us to make the Mac client the best it can be.

NSP0706: That is correct, we haven't announced a release date yet; I will however say that most of you will likely be very pleasantly surprised once we do so.

alexey_boldin: Thanks for the suggestion.

Evangeline2: Depending on what game you are referring to, you might be able to use it on the Mac once we launch.

Racing_Girl14, take two: As said above, we intend to provide our fans with as many dual-entitlement games as possible. We are not at liberty yet to discuss a full list at this time, but as previously said, anything that you can see under the "Mac" filter in your library will be available for you at launch.

Jaberwoki
February 5, 2013
Hey can't download Origin for Mac,

The link goes straight to a different page altogether with Game Demos for Windows... What's the problem?

I already have an Origin account on PC for playing my Games such as Battlefield 3 Premium Edition and BF2 BC, etc. But am fed-up with Windows PC's and would rather these games are brought to Mac in the near future. So it's good to see Origin making a start on the Mac, but I can't seem to download it?
EA_ComRaven
February 5, 2013
Hey all, please note that the Alpha is currently closed to new testers- if you didn't get in previously, you are not able to downlaod the client at the moment, sorry.

We will very soon have more information for you all about the Mac release, so keep an eye on this blog.

And xsznn, once you have registered a game to your Origin, you are able to download it as often as you want without a disc. If it is a game that supports dual-platform play, you will be able to download it on both PC and Mac, yes.

Howlings
March 7, 2013
I currently own the PC version of Simcity 5 and have it downloaded to my Origin account. I know at the moment I cannot play Simcity on my Mac, as it has not been released yet. Once the Mac version is released will it be "hybrid platform", or will I have to buy a completly seperate version of the game for Mac?

I've searched all over the web and cannot find any helpful information on this topic (even on the Simcity Mac FAQ). Alot of us Mac/PC users are wondering.

I purchased the PC version from Gamestop and not directly from Origin.
