What’s Coming in the Next Origin Update

In the coming days, we’ll be rolling out a new update to Origin users worldwide--beginning with players who have opted in to beta updates, and going live for everyone else shortly thereafter.

As always, your helpful suggestions and feedback over the past few months have driven many of the changes you’ll see in this new version of Origin. The two most notable additions we’ve made include the ability to quickly and easily broadcast your gameplay live to Twitch, and the ability to add non-Origin games to your My Games library. Together, these two features unlock entirely new dimensions to your gameplay experience on Origin.  Here’s a quick look at what's coming.

Twitch Broadcasting

We’re proud to announce that Origin is partnering with Twitch, and today we’re launching phase one of this integration. With a few clicks of your mouse, you can now broadcast your gaming session live, directly to your Twitch channel, for gamers around the world to view. With the combined power of Origin and Twitch, it’s never been easier to take your own gameplay online, in real-time.

To start broadcasting, just start playing a game, then bring up Origin In Game by hitting Shift+F1 (or whatever keystroke you’ve chosen for your Origin In Game Hotkey). You’ll notice a camera icon has been added to the bottom of this screen.

Origin In Game Live Broadcast

Selecting this icon will ask you to sign into your Twitch account (or to create one if you’re not a registered Twitch user).

Twitch.tv new user

After signing in, you’ll see the streaming dashboard where you can start or stop your broadcast, give your stream a name, and adjust volume levels.

Origin In Game Live Broadcast

Your stream will be viewable at www.twitch.tv/ [YourTwitchName]. While you're streaming, a broadcast indicator will show up on the top of your screen to let you know how many people are watching your broadcast, and how long you’ve been streaming. Even if you close Origin In Game, the indicator will remain to remind you that you’re broadcasting—and of course, if you don’t want this indicator up all the time, you can just disable it in the settings menu.

The new broadcast tab in the application settings menu will be where you set the defaults for any stream. Here, you can determine broadcast resolution, frame rate, turn off the broadcast indicator, and more.

Origin Broadcast Tab

As we mentioned earlier, broadcasting your gameplay to Twitch is just the beginning--this feature is still in beta, and we advise you to stay tuned for more Twitch services and functionality in future updates to Origin.

A quick caveat for those of you who are new to streaming: broadcasting your game does take up bandwidth, and it may affect your frame rate. If your gameplay slows considerably while streaming, you may want to either reduce the resolution of your broadcast or look into upgrading your CPU.

Adding Non-Origin Games

Another new feature we’ve implemented is the ability to add games purchased outside of Origin to your My Games library. Now you can launch (and broadcast) all your games from a single convenient location.

To add non-Origin games to your library, just select Add Game from the main menu, select Add Games Manually, and pick the titles you would like to add. After making the selection, a shortcut to that game will appear in your My Games library. Right-clicking on that shortcut and selecting “Shortcut properties” will let you change the name and location of that game, and allow you to add any command line arguments (for example, adding “-console” to enable the console command) to your shortcut.

Origin Menus Origin - Add a Game

Additional Upgrades

Adding non-Origin games to your library and integrating Twitch are the two big features in this release, but we’ve made a number of optimizations and small tweaks to the client as well. Your Friends List should now load faster and feel more responsive; we’ve also implemented a change that will let you stretch the Friends List horizontally to accommodate long IDs, status updates, and real names. Right-clicking on Origin in your task bar will now display more options, like recently played games. We improved overall client performance to quicken load times at launch and elsewhere. And, we’ve built-in a feedback survey—because we love to hear from you.

Origin Menus

To the Origin Community we’d like to say thank you again for all the input and suggestions. We’ve worked hard to develop and improve Origin; we hope you enjoy the changes. And we’re not even close to done (for that matter, we really never will be…). If you’ve got as feature you would like to see added to upcoming versions of Origin, please leave us a comment below.

Sounds good, I certainly think Origins doing well as a download program. admittedly not as good as Steam as they have the head start, but certainly way better than Uplay and GFWL. GFWL has been round for years and I can honestly say in terms of usability and user friendliness Origin is vastly superior to GFWL. I hate GFWL so damn much.

An important request I'd make is with your business guys. Origin prices are still far too high. I'd like to pre-order SimCity and Dead Space 3, but the cost of £44.99 and £39.99 respectively is far too HIGH. £29.99 sure no problem. £34.99 debatable, but over £40?! Nope.

I'd also request achievements and a more organised store on Origin which I know you guys are working on.

Cool update.
However
I 'd rather you sort out your marketplace, so that it stays in English when I am abroad in a non-English speaking country.
Currently, it is impossible for me to buy games in Asia - as I appear to also need an Asian bank account/address to purchase them.
I have no idea how this could possibly be helping you sell games...

pffft....

the only reason origin is on my computer, is because i cant purchase battlefield 3through steam, and that the game requires it to run.

this video streaming feature will be the first thing that actually turns this platform to something useful, and not just an unnecessary, and worse version of something that has existed since 2003.

I have an idea. Why not fix the store language problem which you took a survey about in May, instead of adding useless features? People who speak english working abroad still can't use the store because language is set via IP, instead of game client.

All you have to do is have the client send the language of client, and set prices via IP. simple solution. Yet still not fixed since origin came out.

Twitch integration is really cool, but streaming has become a really interactive medium, streamers now use webcams, pull up overlays on the stream, etc. etc. Even though this is in beta right now it would be cool to see future support to expanded options. Currently xsplit is the best i've used because of the tons of features. This will be good for the new comer streamers though. Glad to see other game companies embracing live streaming :D

NICE! Adding Broadcasting option is a huge thing! Nice one guys, hopefully it will work smooth and not going to be unreasonably demanding for the system.

But I have another huge issue that I hope you will address soon - when are you going to remove the friends cap, that was "discovered" when you merged battlelog and origin friends. Having a limitation of how many friends I can have on origin/battlelog is... pointless, and... not really cool.

@ AndreFerrazBR: We are busy working on the Mac client, and hope to have it ready in time for Sim City's launch next March.

@ Bartman18-o_0: In the Origin client settings (scroll down on the first page), there is a check box that allows you to opt-in on beta versions of client updates.

And yes, we are aware that many users would love to see an increase of the friend list's capacity; we will certainly keep this feedback in mind when planing further updates.

Origin will never be better than Steam, for the simple fact that I can buy American games in Steam, when not in America.

If I have to go out and buy the American copy in cd/dvd format from AAFES anyways, stop tying me to a worthless online distribution system.

Not to mention, I don't even have the option of buying it on Steam, since EA put out this origin crap. Congrats EA, I don't buy as many of your games as I use to. I usually will buy from AAFES, but seeing as they don't have all these online sales/discounts/etc, it takes me forever in a day before I even bother getting the game. I want MoH Warfighter, which happens to be on sale...through EA's US site. Guess this military veteran (DoD contractor now) won't get the Veteran's Day sales, cause he's busy serving his country at US Africa Command and US European Command in Germany.

November 12, 2012
I personally think Origin should sort out some fundamental basic connectivity issues before rolling updates as if the product is flawed, no matter how much so-called dressing up will not change the fact it is a crap product. I have so many issues with Origin till I want to give up. Just ensure the product is good to use FIRST before embarking on some make-over.
EA_ComRaven
November 12, 2012
@Ashcraft11 We are busy working on Mac for Origin, which should hopefully be ready by the time Sim City will be out in March. Keep an eye out for future announcements on the Mac client and functionality.

@RavenGrawe Achievements are certainly being worked on as we speak; being a huge 'cheevo fan myself, I can't wait for you guys to see what our devs have cooked up.

@Tigerwood_007, we obviously understand that it can be frustrating to have basic issues with a service. Rest assured that having certain teams work on the "icing" does not mean that we ever intend to forget about the "dough". Every update includes bug fixes, and improvements to performance. If you have specific issues, we are always grateful for feedback on how to improve.

November 15, 2012
My friends list is still not working, and I cannot send or receive friend requests. Will this be fixed in the upcoming update? I've done everything EA Help suggested, and nothing has worked. They have informed me the teams are working on the issue now. It's been about two weeks since I've been unable to add friends, and I would like to play some games with them sooner rather than later..

And it is live and already questions are coming to my mind:
Also new with the update is a Feature to sort your game library by PC-/Mac-Games. As i tried so, None of my games are available on the Mac-Platform, so I am irritated. All the Sims 3 Games are available for PC & Mac in Retail, why not in Origin too??

November 15, 2012
I applaud the Origin team for actually trying to do something better. That being said. Origin still sucks. Hard. Time will tell if they can drag it from the corporate depths of greed and mediocrity. Other then Twitch streaming... I still see little value in this application. I can't even add certain EA games like Mass Effect to my game library. Doesn't matter that it's already on Origin in Digital form, my key won't work and after a ton of calls to support on a host of issues, where I would always mention this "other" bewildering problem... there has been no success.

So, yes, keep working guys. You have miles to go before you are even in the same ballpark of providing what a platform like Steam does.
EA_OneLetter
November 15, 2012
@Zerotexx - We do not currently have the option to add your own box-art for games (Origin or non-Origin), but it's something we're looking at for a future update.

@Punkeren - Right now there is only an option for 30 FPS streaming, but if there's enough of an audience looking for 60, we can certainly look into it.

@dacoxyman - There are currently no Mac games within Origin, as we have no launched the Mac client. We're just testing out the drop-down currently for future implementation.

My suggestion is the restructuring of the popup ad as a banner on the my games tab. it should also be able to be minimized to a few small lines of text (or so). I mentioned this on the forum before but want to re-iterate how annoying the popup is, and how there is a better alternative that still fills the same role. ...there is a reason websites moved from popups to banners.

On a positive note, I am glad to see the improvements being made and real innovation to make origin stand out against the competition. EA has some of the harshest critics but I think (hope?) in the long run EA is up to the challenge! The same critics are actually helping to make Origin spotless, unlike a certain other company that *still* hasn't fixed the "offline mode" (among other things).

Hey guys, very nice new feature including this twitch connection. I've been testing it myself and been having very nice results.
Anyway, I would like to ask, not sure if this is on your end or on twitch's end, but whenever I stream with Origin, it seems like the livestream is not recorded (I can't watch the vids later, after I end the livestream), unlike other livestreaming sources softwares like XSplit (which, sadly, is paid).
Either way, it is a great addition to Origin! Good job!

They still didn't add the one feature this program really needs: minimize at startup. This is such a basic feature and the competition has had it pretty much since day one, making its omission from Origin all the more glaring. What's worse is that people have been asking for this since Origin was EA Downloader and in typical EA fashion, they've completely ignored these requests.

Of course, minimize at startup would let people forget that Origin is running until they need it. God forbid somebody forgets about EA for a few hours.

Would be nice if you didn´t have to close game and Origin every time you lose internet connection. Faster server-connection when playing mass effect 3 or stuff in multiplayer. needs still about 5 min to connect to a game because you have to get new connection after every screen. Don´t know if it is that way in every game, but is annoying

Well since the update 9.1.3 I am no longer able to run Origin and for that matter BF3. I voice an earlier sentiment to that of not applying fixes before they are confirmed 100%. It is obvious that the new update left many players without access now and so they become test monkey's. When is it going to be recognized that software developers that market programs can be publicly charged for software user interuption and expensed time. It amazes me how they continue to stumble at the expense of the user and then expect the user to pay to correct their fumblings.

Mmmh, just a rant, stop forcing me to use German language Origin Store. While I'm located in German speaking area, I don't speak/read the language all that well :P due to this, I haven't bought anything from the origin store directly. Getting my games mostly when I'm on a holiday in my home country.

January 15, 2013
its getting there, however, the fact that UPLAY, ubisofts client has beaten you to th epunch in basic functons such as voice chat, party creation and ACHIEVEMENTS, is pretty sad. Ubisoft is PC's worst enemy and they have beaten you.

Come on, its time for origin to step it up. Change your fugly store layout, change your theme make it more modern, add a community where people can share ala facebook. Screenshots, voice chat.

These are basic functions that if you have Origin could get really far. As of now, there is nothing that origin can do that steam or uplay cant with the exception of twitch tv, which btw its faulty as heck.

Stop with this EURO nonsense. I live in South AMERICA not Spain. I also want the client to be in English by default, this Spanish crap is nonsense. Everytime I try to download origin I am taken to the Spanish website and then I have to see everything in Spanish and on top of that pay in EUROS. Not fair. I would love to buy games on origin but I am forced to buy them somewhere else for dollars and you don't get all the money there.

More payment options would be amazing. Maybe for people who only have cash? squareenix did it for ffxiv and thus the reason I kept paying for it.

Lastly, your interface. Its slow, clunky. Needs to be more organized, cath the eye more. Give us some statistics, give us a reason to look at your store. Put the main game big, other in an organized list of genres or something. Its atrocious to even go through that sore, I go to neogaf and I find it better there.

Thanks

I suspect all the good reviews/posts are ea origin employes,i mean just look at half of them, furthermore why would i want to buy any games from origin the only reason i use it,is because I'm forced too, also games cost more on origin than anywhere else.It is at very best **** poor, when you stat on bad footing everything else is just a stagger, keep making tiny steps while steam makes leaps and bounds in front of you,i would never recommend origin to anyone or ea for that matter all they do is split the community oh BTW well done for winning worst company award lets make it two in a row.
all my love and none of my respect Spunkfire!

I just wish they would fix the "EA Origin has stopped working" error, I can't even play Mass Effect 3 because of this crash. have opened my firewall to Origin, Mass Effect 3 and the EAcore but nothing works.
